Build Report:Had some problems first after finishing this build. But a closer look at the backside of the pcb solved everything. Tremendous build!!!Best Phaser i've ever heard!
Thanks tonepad!!

For any non experienced follower: This is not a simple build! Lots of soldering causes lots of mistake sources!
check everything twice and don't hustle, then this is also possible build for you!

please also don't use cheap parts, it will be worth it!

Build Report:Built 2 of these last year, one for me, one for a friend. Don't underestimate the difficulty of this build. There is a mammoth load of components to solder to the board, large scope for error. (Its a fanastic pedal though).

I had a couple of problems with mine. Hope this info might help others: One of the 2 pedals i built stopped oscillating about a month after i finished it. The 'swooshing' just stopped. If you have a similar problem, connect your multimetre negative to the battery and use the positive to go around IC's 1-4 and check the voltages on all the pins. The voltage's on these 4 IC's should all be the same. I worked out, one of the IC's voltages were different from the other 3. No matter which socket i moved it too, the voltages were different. Bought a new c3080, swapped it, now it works again!

Even with the issues i had, it was worth it. It's a challenging build, but i can honestly say, i'll never need another phaser, it's versatile and has a huge range. I've built 10+ pedals from tonepad, this one's my favourite and most impressive effect.

Good luck, and give it go!!
Paul.

Build Report:This took me a bit to get right, had a few problems - sloppy board (made it hard to see the numerous shorts I had unknowingly made!), but once I cleaned up the board and put it together (with the Univibe and input resistor mods)...I can't believe how great this sounds. If you haven't done the mods, they are definitely worth doing. Very cool pedal. Thanks Tonepad...

Build Report:I built this for my backup mini-pedalboard, i already have an original USA Reissue Small Stone, so i decide to build one by my self but housed in a smaller box (i used an Hammond BC, it's like a B but taller).
Really a nice build, but remember it's not a beginner project. you shuold have a bit of experience before soldering this one.
for mods i did those:
- Cb 100uF
- input resistor 47k
- colour-Switch On-Off-On

I used an on-off-on since i hadn't an on-on. the off position works nicely too! it's like the normal off-colour position but with a little bit more emphasis.
btw its sound like my trusty Reissue!
really a good project! thanks again Tonepad! ;-)

Build Report:Excellent. A simple build and trouble free. Just take your time, work clean, check all your component values twice before soldering them in place, and you'll be there shortly.

I used a dpdt stompswitch for the color, which is so much better than having to lean over. I considered lifting the 30k that runs to blend with the input for a vibrato-mode, but opted out at the last minute.

Has anyone else done the vibe mod to this, and if so, is it worth doing?

Build Report:Just built this pedal using the tonepad pcb last night. Wow, what a beautiful sounding phaser! With the color switch down it is subtle, allowing more guitar tone through, perfect for gentle clean strumming. With the color switch up it's a brilliant swooshing phaser, much more pronounced. Perfect post-rock sounds (think Appleseed Cast and Mogwai etc.)And with a tubescreamer and delay/reverb you can get some awesome space rocksounds!

Oh yeah, I tried the mod from GGG to get rid of the volume drop: R11 and R42 changed to 10k. It solved the problem but when color switch was on the feedback was so high it just produced a crazy siren oscilliating noise. I found that a 100k resistor in R11 solved this.

Cheers Tonepad!

Build Report:I was doing some maintenence on a bunch of my old pedals and while working on my Small Stone I stumbled across this site. With a true bypass switch mine also had the volume drop problem which was solved by the easy way of changing the input resistor from 100k to 47k.

Build Report:WOW! the only word that comes to mind when you finish a project of this caliber. This is by far the best sounding phase i have ever heard, and with the volume drop mod it is tonal perfection. With the color switch up it is phase heaven, with it down it has a more subtle tighter phase. I defintely suggest building this because it sounds dead on like the orginal and it is very cost efficient using ca3080's instead of the obselete ca3094's. Awesome build, awesome board

Build Report:Excelent project.
I did some MOD's but changing the 2 resistros didn't cure the volume loss and modified the timbre a little.
My solution was to reduce to half the value of the IN resistor.(from 100k to 47K)
It worked to me.

Build Report:Worked great on the first try. This is my first analog phaser, and it's much better sounding than digital ones. I'm using it on guitars and keyboards. It's the only effect I've ever run my OBXa through that doesn't take away from its great sound.

Mods added were 1) 2M pot for LFO speed to get really slow settings, 2) 1M pot instead of resonance switch, 3) 3 position rotary switch with .0068 caps in first, .0168 of capacitance in second (works better for some keyboards), and the univibe cap mod in third, 4) switch to cut out two OTA stages 5) switch to cut two OTA stages to ground, 6) switch to change 10uF cap to .01uF (works better on some keyboard sounds).

I didn't have much luck with the volume drop fix, so I added a 4.7k resistor followed by a 10k volume trimpot to the bypass to lower the bypassed volume. I have a separate buffer before the phaser. That seems to work well thus far.

Thanks Tonepad for a great PCB.

A ASSUME SOUND - ONCE I APPLIED CHARLES MODS.

Build Report:This project took quite a while to build (several nights slaving over a hot soldering iron!), and when it finally came to time to test it, nothing worked! Oh no, this was tragic...

It turns out that I had wired the transistors backwards (I used BC549 and BC559 transistors which are wired opposite to the 2N5087/8 ones as displayed in the layout) and my stompswitch was faulty.

Fixing these mishaps resulted in the most sweetest sound I have heard from a phaser! It is certainly a different flavor of phaser than the MXR Phase 90 which I built a little while back.

I agree, it is well worth the time it takes to build!

Build Report:--Sounds GREAT! Beautiful shimmering phase and thick "color". Sounds as good or better than my stock 70's Small Stone, and can be built w/ higher quality components.

To remove output "ticking" (problem w. some stock Small Stones):
47uF for "Cb"
10uF 100v non-polarized electrolytic for "Ca". (!!) .1 cap didn't cut it, but much bigger caps did the trick for me.

R24 can be messed w/ to control speed range, but I came back to 100 ohms.

mods to control "color": suggested by RG Keen via JD sleeps' site.

10K trimmer instead of R11
2K resistor in series w/ 5K linear pot instead of R42

Crank the pot all the way up and then turn down the trim until right before the squealing starts. You're done!

Other notes: lots of soldering in tight areas here. Not for a beginner, but a great project. Mr. Pena did a great job on the PCB.

Build Report:Hey, this thing rocks!
Really wah like phasing. I haven't tried to make the volume drop mods yet, but still, this is a groove machine.
I built mine with the BC549 for NPN trannies and BC559 for PNP's. Used a 1M log pot too.

Very rich and crisp phasing. I highly recommend it.

Build Report:Dang this one sounds good. At least it did until I broke it.

Be sure to try the mod (2 resistors involved) for eliminating the volume drop when the effect is engaged.
